Submitted by KevinTech: 'Dwarf Planet' Eris Misconceptions  (Science)

Who are you mr planet?
Who are you mr planet?

Eris:  It was first spotted in 2003, but not identified
  until
later in 2005. It was larger than Pluto and is
residence to real estate beyond the Kuiper Belt.
The "It" I'm referring to is our Solar System's
  10th planet, the Dwarf Planet, "2003 UB313"
or "Eris" for short. Eris and its satellite "Dysnomia"
was identified by Mike Brown and a team of
  astronomers at the Palomer Observatory.

Ahh romance

Before officialy naming the Dwarf Planet

and its satellite, Brown gave the nicknames
"Xena" to the Planet, and "Gabrielle" to
its satellite. I feel it is important
that you
know, that yes, this is a direct reference
to the TV show characters "Xena: Warrior
Princess" and her (sidekick) "Gabrielle." (1)

It isn't hard to understand Brown's reasoning for the names, a name starting with X was being saved for our Solar System's 10th planet, if we were to ever find one, and we did, we found "Planet X" (keep this in mind for later). It wasn't long after the discovery that, as my fallen hero Carl Sagan would say, "The demons began to stir"...

Eureka!

The internet and alternative media was flooded with Pseudo-Scientific claims that   Nasa had discovered  "Nibiru" and had renamed it "Eris" to cover it up. Their   reasoning behind this was bizarre; because astronomers were referring to Eris as   "Planet X" (and it is Planet X by the way) the conspiracy theorists automatically   assumed it was the fictional Planet X that has been popularized by "nut jobs"   Nancy Lieder (of Zeta Talk) (2) and Zecharia Sitchin (self proclaimed authority on   Sumerian history) (3).The same Planet X that the Pseudo-Scientists want you to   believe will be visible in 2009, and kill us all in 2012! (4)

This was a big let down for science, and rationality alike at the time, and still is today, if you search "Eris" on google you will find more search results pointing toward a conspiracy than anything legitimate or educational. And if you go on youtube, and submit the same search, you will find a plethora of videos propagating the same Pseudo-Scientific nonsense. (5)

People claiming that Eris is in fact Nibiru use faulty data to back up their claims, like misconceptions, astrology, and even images of astronomical bodies that aren't even Eris to push their claim. One video I saw used an image of 838 monocerotis and said it was "Eris/Nibiru." Ufo Digest even goes as far to claim that Eris is growing! (6)

It is growing with hatred.. for all mankind!

But that is just a few of many errors, when you look at the
whole "Nibiru" story you
can see just how big of a fiasco
this Eris "conspiracy" has become.

For starters, the Nibiru proponents claim that Nibiru is a Brown Dwarf (which aren't planets or stars to begin with, and are known to actually pair up with a star) or Nibiru orbits a Brown Dwarf. Eris may be a Dwarf Planet, but a Brown Dwarf it is not. Brown Dwarfs are roughly the size of Jupiter or larger (7), and Eris is smaller than our own moon, which is way, way smaller than Jupiter. If you don't fancy all that book learnin in school I will gladly provide a size comparison:

But the battle of "Eris is Nibiru" doesn't end there, It should, but the proponents are quick to point out that Eris has a high elliptical orbit, "Just like Nibiru!" In fact, Eris does have a high elliptical orbit (8), but there's a huge difference between a high elliptical orbit of 557 years, and the 3000-3600 year high elliptical orbit of the fictional planet "Nibiru." (9) High elliptical orbits aren't uncommon at all, Halley's comet has one (10), and some of our man made satellites in the Earth's orbit have them (11). It just isn't logical to peg everything with that kind of orbit as being "Nibiru."

This should be enough to convince anyone with a rational, open,
clear mind, that Eris is indeed not a rogue planet named "Nibiru" on its way to
Earth to kill us all, shift our poles, or bear the return of our
creators, the ANNUNAKI, or whatever else the Nibiru proponents can come up
with. Sadly,if you are a Nibiru proponents, this information will
not be enough to sway your opinion one bit.
